Unit 2- Pre-production and planning skills test

1. Identify two costs that you need to consider when developing a new phone app and explain how these costs impact on the project. (6)

You will need to consider the cost of advertising when developing a new phone app because it is essential when creating a new product to spread awareness of it and gain a specific customer base. This will impact the product because advertising can be quite expensive especially TV advertisement during peak times so it will take up a chunk of any budget you may have. Another cost will be the wages of the person designing the phone application. If someone in the company doesn't have the required skills or knowledge to design the app, you will need to hire someone who does and pay them a set wages, whether they are on contract for an hourly rate or get wages for the whole project at the beginning. This will have an impact on the project because if the app has to be completed by a certain time or date, it may be time consuming finding someone with the specialist skills needed to design the app.

2. Identify one act of legislation that is applicable to the creation of a new national newspaper and explain what impact it has. (3)

The new newspaper would have to abide by the data protection act of 1998 so any personal information that they have about their employees or the public that they want kept safe, the new newspaper cannot share it and make it available for public viewing.

3. You have been offered a job as an apprentice for a company called Align Media. When they offered you the apprenticeship, you were required to sign a form giving the intellectual property rights of any work you produce to Align Media. Explain why you were required to sign this form. (3)

I was required to sign this form so that any work i have produced for Align Media, is rightfully theirs, so it cannot be copied by one of Align Media's competitors so by getting me to sign the document they are making sure the work i do is safe and secure. Also any creative ideas i have will be the property of Align Media rather than me.

4. Identify one type of revenue stream that you could consider to make a website profitable and explain why this might be an effective method. (3)

One type of revenue stream that can be considered to make a website profitable are the pop-up adverts on either sides of the screen. This is an effective method because if a website is selling a product, these adverts could show them to the person viewing the website so it is gaining more recognition. Also, many companies pay for their products to be advertised on people's websites so this is a good way to make money and be profitable.

5. Identify two ethical issues that you would need to consider before your team develops ideas for a documentary on refugees. Explain how these will impact on the project. (8)

One ethical issue that would need to be considered before a documentary on refugees is made is discrimination. When this type of documentary is made it is essential that no one will be harmed or offended by what they are viewing. This is because it will have an impact on the project that has been produced as they will loose viewership due to offensive nature and eventually the project will be a failure should there be hardly any viewers and barely any profit made.

Another ethical issue that needs to be considered is whether it is right to portray refugees and they way they are living in a short documentary because it can be false and unjust if they are showing their viewers how the refugees live without the full facts of it. Also, the refugees would want a say in whether they agree to the documentary being produced because it could be seen as invasion of privacy. This will impact the project because if no refugee wants to be filmed, the documentary will not be made because they don't have consent and the project will fall through.

6. Identify one regulatory body which could provide guidance with regard to creating a new advert for a children's charity. Explain your choice. (2)

The advertising Standards Authority (ASA) reviews and regulates adverts that are shown to the public. They would provide guidance with regard to creating an advert for a children's charity because they can tell people what appeals to viewers and what shouldn't be in the advert if they want to be successful. Also, they can provide case studies of previous charity ads that have and haven't been appropriate.
